Obituary

BEVERLY DOUGLASS CLARK 6/4/1922 – 3/20/2014 GREENSBORO Beverly Douglass Clark, 91, died peacefully in her sleep of natural causes at Well-Spring Retirement Community surrounded by her family. Beverly was a loving, caring woman- wife, mother, and grandmother – who had five children, eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was beloved by her large family and wide circle of friends that she made wherever life's adventures took her, from California to Florida to Ohio to North Carolina. Beverly was born in Los Angeles, California, on June 4, 1922, to Nelson and Dorothy Douglass. She grew up in Beverly Hills, graduating from Beverly Hills High School in 1940, where she was voted Best Looking in her class, which included actresses Rhonda Fleming and Betty White. She matriculated to UCLA, where she joined the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and became its president before graduating in 1944. In 1945-46, Beverly worked as an assistant and lecturer in UCLA's Department of Art. Beverly started dating Martin B. Clark, student body president at Los Angeles High School, after their mothers introduced them in 1939. Martin proposed to Beverly in January, 1945, while on leave from the US Army Air Corps near the end of World War II and they were married on February 25, 1946 in Puerto Rico. Martin and Beverly were married for 64 years before his death in 2010. They raised five children in California, Florida, and Ohio, as Martin pursued a career in department store management. Beverly continued her involvement with Kappa Alpha Theta, and through its network, made many friends for life, as the family moved around the country. She did volunteer work through KAE, as well as the Junior League of Miami, Red Cross, and Care Net of Vero Beach. Moreover, Beverly was an active and devout member of the Episcopal and Anglican Churches and gave her time freely to parish activities and programs wherever she lived. Throughout their life together, Beverly and Martin traveled the world — to Europe, the Middle East, China, South America and Indonesia. Their last big trip was to New Zealand. Following Martin's death in 2010 in Vero Beach, Florida, Beverly moved to Well-Spring Retirement Community, Greensboro, in 2012. Beverly is survived by her children Douglass Burns Clark (Barbara Christ), Steven Martin Clark, Shelley Kappauf (Charles), and Duncan Nelson Clark (Sharron); grandchildren Dr. Amy Clark, Benjamin Clark, Matthew Brancato (Ondraya), Hannah Brancato (Kyle Smith), Catharine Kappauf, Martin Kappauf, Charles Kappauf Jr. (Laetitia) Ansley Clark, Ian Clark, Hunter Clark; and great grand-daughter Avery Brancato. She was predeceased by daughter Kim Clark Wilson (Chris), grand-daughter Emmeline Brancato, and daughter-in-law Nancy Aptekar. Memorial services will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 2105 West Market Street, Greensboro, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, with a reception to follow. A separate memorial service will be held at Christ Anglican Church, Vero Beach at a later date. Donations/contributions may be made to: St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Greensboro
