There will be no going away service for me because I experienced my hellos and goodbyes while I was alive. I saw their tears of joy and sadness while my eyes could see. I heard their laughter and cries while my ears could hear. I felt their touches of endearment while I could still yet feel. I once heard "Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome". I learned this is true. As I was transitioning these are the beautiful things I heard... "Daddy you are the best dad ever. You've been here for us through everything. Thank you so much for teaching us how to read, ride a bike and look for answers to life's most pressing questions. Thank you for making sure we had safe cars to drive, for walking us down the aisle of marriage and for always having your door open for our comings and goings." "Dad, you're so handsome and funny and we loved how you whistled the most beautiful songs throughout the house. We can still smell your pancakes on Sunday mornings as you cooked us pancakes with Sam Cooke blaring in the background. You educated us with your vast knowledge and you entertained us with your beautiful singing, you made us chuckle and think with your witty, sarcastic humor." They reminded me of how strong I was when I'd hold them up in the air and play with them for hours, but soon my feeble hands wouldn't be able to hold a coffee cup, yet they would hold it for me as I drank my last sips. As to took my last walk from my famous den chair to my new transitioning bed my girls were walking with me, as these would be my last steps. They gave me my last meal of homemade applesauce and peaches. I ate it for them, because I knew they needed me to. This would be my last gesture of fatherhood here on this earth. As my breath grew shorter, my girl's hands got tighter. When asked by them if I needed oxygen, I mustered up the strength to slowly motion my head to communicate a sure no. At 7:35 am on August 24th, I took my last breath and my girls were covering me from head to toe. I must have done pretty darn good. It doesn't matter where I worked, lived, grew up or when I was born. All that matters is I loved hard while I was here. I labored tirelessly, so others could be comfortable and I sacrificed many dreams so other could live theirs and it was worth it. No funeral for me. I'm now living through my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. May they use my DNA wisely and continue to honor my life with theirs. For if you see them, you've seen their daddy.
