September 24, 1953 ~ November 13, 2014 (age 61)

John H. Marlin passed away November 13, 2014, at Beacon Place Hospice House in Greensboro, NC., after battling Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) for almost 26 months.  He was born September 24, 1953, to John and Frances Marlin, and grew up on Davie Ave. After graduating from Statesville High School and Catawba College, he obtained a master's degree in social work from Tulane University.  He was disability retired from Guilford County Dept. of Social Services.

John leaves behind his partner Harry Philpott, his two sisters, Linda (John) Marshall and Ginny (Tom) Mohler.   A large extended family of aunts, uncle, nieces and nephews, and sixteen cousins will remember him. During his healthy years and never ceasing during his battle against cancer, he was surrounded and supported by loving friends in Greensboro: David Angel, Joanie Baites, Gail Turpin, Don Hanner, Peg Parham, Mark Rizzolo, Roger ,Carolyn.  Special thanks go to Dr. Kalsoom Khan and Dr. Matthew Manning for their compassionate care during this time.

Memories of John include his kind and gentle spirit, his uplifting nature photos shared on Facebook, his love of cars and driving his "Z" to Virginia Beach, playing his music and enjoying movies with friends. Never having a problem with his appetite, he was always up for an ice cream or yogurt treat. We will always remember his laugh that made others laugh, too! His goal was to enjoy one more Christmas and watch Carolina play basketball; even though he did not reach those goals, he maintained a positive outlook and grateful heart for the time he did enjoy.

John Hartman will conduct an informal memorial service at Fellowship Presbyterian Church, 2005 New Garden Rd, Greensboro, on Saturday, November 22, at 2 pm. Guests are requested to wear bright colors to this celebration of John's life. Memorials can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
