Obituary

Melvin Stanley Smith, 81, left this world May 27, 2023 in Kernersville, N.C. Melvin was born in Guilford County August 25, 1941 to Jack and Estea Mahaffey Smith. Mel always had a sense of Wanderlust. He lived in Michigan, Indiana, North and South Carolina. He had a PhD in Life. He loved reading, football, racing, Boxcar Willie, and eating out. He was a news junkie. He loved and lived his own way til the very end.

Surviving family includes son Stan Smith & Melissa of Kernersville, NC, daughter Dedi Smith Hutchins & Jeff of Conway, SC, grandchildren Shane Dillon of Myrtle Beach, SC, Brandy Graham of Florence, SC, Emily Smith of Kernersville, NC, Lauren Carter & Michael of High Point, NC, Madelyn Smith of Kernersville, NC. Mel was also  blessed with 5 great grandchildren!  Also surviving Mel are his precious sisters who have selflessly taken care of him these last 19 months. They put his needs above their own and lovingly drove him wherever he needed to be, entertained him, cared for him, laughed and cried with him. They advocated for him everyday and every night. Because of them, we had extra time with Mel, and he with us. Thank you Jenny Smith of Greensboro, NC, Marvene Shore & Don of Randleman, NC, Barbara Wagner of High Point. We love you and will forever be grateful.

And a Special Thank You to Kenny Byrd & Don Shore, who were never required to do all that they did, but helped him any and every way they could. A final thank you to Melissa at Brookdale, who cared more than most, and prayed for his well being like he was family. A fall gathering will be announced at a later date.

melvin was always the light to my days here at the graybrier on my days of work. i would always go and check in on him and i would wake him up and he would look at me and say "well how the hell are you kid". once he moved away i gave him a short visit at the 311 flea market just to see him and say hello. melvin was one of a kind, and made sure to always make you laugh or smile. he will live on in my heart forever.

Melissa, thank you so much for all the love and care you and the staff at Brookdale gave Mel. He truly loved each of you. So many times you would "calm" me when I became overly worried. I love you and the staff there. I can't thank you enough.

    Melissa Caudle says:
I will forever be grateful for knowing Melvin Smith. He was both sweet and stubborn at the same time, but had that little grin that said- "thanks for checking on me" even though he worked so tirelessly at being independent. He always said thank you and truly enjoyed his morning coffee. It was a pleasure to know him for a short time, and to see the loving care provided to him from his sisters and other family members, and his son. Thank you for allowing us to care for him and my thoughts and prayers are with you all.
