Elder Glenn Everett McGirt Sr.

December 23, 1959 ~ July 7, 2023 (age 63)

Obituary

Elder Glenn Everett McGirt, Sr., Coach of Team McGirt was born on December 23, 1959 in Hinesville, Georgia. On July 7, 2023, he scored the winning touchdown and left the field at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC.

Glenn spent his childhood in Greensboro, NC where he received his formal education. He was a graduate of Grimsley High School and received his Associate’s Degree from Guilford Technical Community College. Glenn served his country in the United States Army, as a Generator Mechanic and was a veteran of the Persian Gulf War (Desert Storm). He was stationed in Germany for several years during his military career and worked for Guilford Mills and Flexible Foam after his return to NC.

Glenn met and married the love of his life, Michelle Phelps, while working for Guilford Mills. They spent 30 years together and July 8, 2023 marked their 28th year of marriage. From this union came their daughters, Kristina Miracle and Kayla Dream McGirt and their fur baby Kason. Glenn and Michelle were best friends and everyone who knew them knew the love they had for one another.

Glenn was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend. He often spent time guiding his sons on how to be good husbands to their wives. Glenn believed that his wife should always come before anyone and that’s the wisdom that he imparted in his sons. He was a laid back, quiet man of very few words until he was passionate about the subject; then at times, he was the life of the party. We always said he was the loudest, quiet person because of his witty sense of humor.

Glenn loved his San Francisco 49ers, and he disliked the Dallas Cowboys just as much. He and Michelle typically couldn’t watch football in the same room when the Cowboys were playing because of Glenn’s smack talking.

Glenn accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and grew up as a member of Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC. He remained passionate about serving God and spent the last 20 years at Love, Faith & Hope Ministries in High Point, NC
under his pastors, William & Vanessa Buckson, and the church family that he loved dearly. Glenn approached and taught the Word of God in a way that left us in amazement. He was fully committed to his walk with Christ and would share it openly.

Glenn was preceded in the Kingdom of God by his mother, Ophelia A. McGirt, father, Delmus McGirt, brother, Larry T. McGirt and son, Deven R. McGirt.

Loved ones left to cherish his memories include, his loving wife and soulmate, Elder Michelle McGirt and their children, LaShonda M. Wright, Alexis M. Wright (Allen Holmes), G. Everitt Wright, daughter-in-love, April Wright, Justin L. Blackmon, Glenn E. McGirt, Jr., K. Miracle McGirt, Kayla D. McGirt and fur baby, Kason McGirt. He had one sister whom he loved dearly, Cynthia McGirt Johnson, a brother-in-love, Van Johnson and one nephew, Preston L. Johnson.

Seven grandchildren, Raine and Empress Wright, Jayden Richardson, Justice, Ethan and Eva Blackmon and A.J. Holmes. Mother-in-love, Mae Lois Baker, father-in-law, Matthew Taylor and the late John H. Johnson, special cousin, Linda Cope and a host of other relatives and friends.

Glenn’s presence is already greatly missed by his family and friends. We thank our Heavenly Father for blessing us with the many years and memories that we had with him. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord and we know that all is well with his soul.

Mrs. Glenn E. McGirt, Sr. says:
My husband, soulmate, best friend, confidant, oh how difficult it is to live in this new reality. Your presence is already missed. Your silly, but witty one liners, your devotion to your family and the Word of God are all missed. We built a lot together in 30 years and the legacy you left will continue to live through your family and friends. It may appear to others that you lost the battle, but I know that you’ve scored the winning touchdown because you’re in the presence of the Father. Rest well my love. I love you beyond eternity. 💕💙💕

    VANESSA BUCKSON says:
To the Mc Girt Family & Friends We are so grateful to have had Elder Glenn as part our Love Faith & Hope Ministries church family and a very special friend. Elder Glenn gave of himself to the community in the way of feeding the hungry, giving out school supplies and teaching the youth. We will be forever thankful for your stewardship with the ministry and your dedication to the work of the Lord. Even when life presented its challenges, you always took a positive approach and showed love, honor and respect. You will be greatly missed among those of us who knew and cared/loved you deeply. We believe you left a great legacy here that will live in the hearts of all your family and friends. “You fought a good fight- You finished your course and you kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for you, a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, she’ll give you at that day: and not to you only, but until all them also, that love he is appearing”. 2 Timothy 4:7-8.
