Mr. Larry Tyrone McGirt

January 13, 1957 ~ June 24, 2023 (age 66)

Obituary

Larry Tyrone McGirt was born on January 13,1957 in Aldora, Georgia and ended his earthly journey on June 24, 2023, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, NC.

Larry spent his childhood in Greensboro where he received his formal education, graduating from Grimsley High School. He served his country in the U.S. Army, as a Medic and was a veteran of Desert Storm. He was also stationed in Germany for several years during his military career and worked for Guilford Mills after his return to NC.

While Larry had no children of his own, he had several nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly, never missing the opportunity to call them on a holiday, special occasion or just to check in and say he loved them. They all loved him so much, his two youngest nieces affectionately referred to him as Uncle Bootie Boo.

Larry was a great guy who never met a stranger and was a jack of all trades. When you visited the homeplace, he always made you feel welcome and wanted to feed you whether you were hungry or not. We’d always tease that Larry would give away the keys to the kingdom if he had them.

Larry was unconditionally loved by his family and friends. He had a fierce love for the Duke Blue Devils and the San Francisco 49ers and didn’t mind letting you know. He also had a strong dislike for the Dallas Cowboys, which sparked a lot of friendly “smack talking” and texting wars between him and his sister-in-love, Michelle.

Larry accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and grew up as a member of Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC. He recently reaffirmed his salvation in the presence of God, his sister, Cynthia and sister-in-love, Michelle. He wanted to make his calling and election sure where he’d spend eternity.

Larry was preceded in the Kingdom of God by his mother, Ophelia A. McGirt and father, Delmus McGirt.

Loved ones left to cherish his memories include, his sister Cynthia McGirt Johnson and brother-in-love, Van Johson, brother, Elder Glenn E. McGirt, Sr. and sister-in-love, Elder Michelle McGirt. His four nieces, LaShonda M. Wright, Alexis M. Wright (Allen), K. Miracle McGirt, Kayla D. McGirt. His four nephews, G. Everitt Wright (April) Justin L. Blackmon, Glenn E. McGirt, Jr., and Preston L. Johnson.

Seven great-nieces and nephews, Raine and Empress Wright, Jayden Richardson, Justice, Ethan and Eva Blackmon and A.J. Holmes. Special cousin, Linda Cope and a host of other relatives and friends.

Larry will be greatly missed by his family and friends and we thank our Heavenly Father for allowing us the many years that we had with him. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord and we know that all is well with his soul.

    Michelle McGirt says:
My dear brother, what an impact you made on my life. Over 30 years ago when I spent my first Christmas with the McGirt family, you accepted me as your sister. You always made me feel welcome and never missed an opportunity to say you loved me, but you also never missed an opportunity to give me a hard time about my Cowboys. Lol! I will forever remember all the fusses we had when it came to football even during your final days here. I’ll stand down for a bit. You finally win, this season I’ll be cheering on those 49ers in your honor. Rest well! You are loved!
