Neil Swann Jr, 70, of Oak Ridge, NC, started his next of many fishing trips on Monday at 10:48 am, April 24, 2023, surrounded by family at Beacon Place in Greensboro, NC. Neil was born June 10, 1952, in Wilmington, NC to Neil Sr and Doris Geraldine (Barber) Swann. He was an electrician and contractor, and custom built his own home. He retired from Duke Energy after 47 years as an Apparatus Technical Support Technician. He married Teresa Holton, and they had a daughter, Jennifer.
Neil loved the outdoors and in his earlier life he was an excellent catcher in little league baseball for NC National Bank and for Jackson Jr High School. He then moved on to wrestling for Ben L Smith High School and came in 2nd in the State Championships twice. He loved trick water skiing, sky diving, and his passion was deep-sea fishing. His true love was playing the banjo where he was self-taught at 13, then at 17 started playing with a local band called Ron Davis and the Blue Shadow Boys in 1969. The four-man band played weekly for 25-minute segments on channel 48. Later he played the banjo for the Missouri Hogshead. He loved going to Bluegrass Festivals and never missed a MerleFest, and one of his all-time favorites was Alison Krauss.
Neil is proceeded in death by his father, Neil (Shorty, Snookey, Snooka-Paw) Sr, mother, Doris Geraldine (Barber) Swann, sister Billie Jo Swann Byrd. He is survived by his wife Teresa Swann and his devoted daughter Jennifer Lamb (Randy), grandsons Blaine and Jacob (Ally), sister Barbara (Linda), brothers Clift (Kim) and David (Eva), numerous nieces and nephews, his box turtle Little Tee and his dogs Squeaker, Max, and Joey.
Special thanks to all of Neil’s caregivers, doctors, and nurses at Cone Health Wesley Long Hospital and Beacon Place-Hospice.
Honoring Neil’s wishes, there will be no service and he will be cremated, and ashes scattered in the ocean to find their final resting place, by boat off the shores of Emerald Isle, NC.
