Peggy Jean Charles
October 18, 1929 ~ April 19, 2023 (age 93)Obituary
Peggy Jean (Stiers) Charles was born at 8:10 am on October 18, 1929, to the late J. A. Stiers and Ellen Jones Stiers. Peggy was born and spent her early years in a little house on Adams Street in Lexington, NC., with her three brothers (Harry, Bill, and JG) and two sisters (Edith and Nancy). They grew up in the difficult times of the depression. Peggy was predeceased in death by her parents and siblings. She attended and graduated from Lexington Senior High School in 1947, where she was the point guard and a basketball standout.
On June 11, 1948, Peggy married Bill Charles, and they moved to 1319 Holly Grove Rd, where she remained until she moved to Yadkin Nursing Care Center in Yadkinville, NC. Peggy and Bill's marriage produced two sons (Stan and Craig) and one daughter (Sandra). Peggy was a devoted wife to Bill, but unfortunately, he died from cancer at age 47, leaving Peggy to raise their three children alone. Peggy's children became her life. Peggy was always a survivor, becoming a telephone operator to care for her family. Peggy had the difficult experience of burying her son, Stan, in 2009. She became a grandmother to Jackson in 1995, to Sam in 1997, and to Harry in 2001. Her three grandchildren inherited her love and talent for music. She also became a grandmother to Dylan Spry in 2016 and she loved him as one of her own.
In her retirement, Peggy traveled the world through her voracious love of reading. She also loved listening to music and was a great cook and especially enjoyed baking, gaining notoriety for her devil's food cake and biscuits.
Peggy passed away on April 19, at 93, with her daughter, Sandy, by her side. Peggy is survived by her son, Craig (Martha), and daughter, Sandy Tucker (Doug), as well as beloved grandchildren, Jackson Charles (Heather), Sam Charles, Harry Charles, and Dylan Spry.
Memorial donations can be made to Yadkin Nursing Care Center, the Activity Department, where she was lovingly taken care of, or Liberty Hospice, which took loving care of her during her last year.
