GREENSBORO – Peter George Kauber passed away on September 27, 2014 after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on May 7, 1941 to the late George Kauber and Mildred Beitz Kauber in Buffalo, NY, and was raised on Cayuga Island, Niagara Falls, NY. After earning his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Buffalo, and a Masters Degree in Computer Science at Bowling Green State University, he taught at a number of universities, including University of Buffalo, Bowling Green State University, NC State University, and UNC Greensboro. He interspersed his teaching career with stints in industry, including Marathon Oil, Transport Source, Planters Lifesavers, Sara Lee, Wachovia, First Union in Charlotte, and Unifi.
Peter's greatest love was spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, son-in-law, and brother-in-law. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Donna Guinard, son Christopher (Smurf) Kauber, granddaughter Mya Kauber, brother David Kauber (of Aurora, NY), and many cousins, in-laws, and friends who will miss him greatly. His sister, Barbara Kauber, predeceased him.
Peter loved learning, and in retirement was happy to be a perpetual student. He enthusiastically promoted renewable energies, serving as Co-Director of Guilford Solar Communities Program and Guilford Energy Resources. He served on the City of Greensboro Zoning Commission, Board of Adjustment, and Comprehensive Plan Monitoring Committee. He was active in the Greensboro Neighborhood Congress and SouthWest Neighborhood Association. Peter had a love of music, especially jazz, playing the piano and alto sax in his young adulthood, and keyboard in retirement. He convinced his wife to take dance lessons with him, resulting in the past eight years of dance lessons, participation in several local dance clubs, and making wonderful friends in the dance community. He was also a lifelong amateur radio operator (W8LOG), first obtaining his ham radio operators license at the age of 14.
