Obituary

On the morning of April 17, Richard Clingman ‘Cling’ Capps, 56, passed peacefully at home, joyfully completing his battle with cancer in the confidence of the Lord Jesus Christ.

He is survived by his wife Isabel, son Christian, his step-daughter Hillary, his sisters Carol, Annette Jenkins (Doug), Pam Merrit, and Shannon Lewis, his brothers John, Mark (Pam), Scott (Tara), his two grandchildren, and his many beloved nephews, nieces, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents Rev. Clingman Capps and Patricia Lewis Capps.

More than any personal accomplishments, Cling treasured that he was a child and servant of God through Jesus Christ. He sought to reflect this identity in all that he did, including his 23 years in banking with Washington Mutual, Wachovia, and Wells Fargo, and his later career as a High School teacher at West Craven and Havelock (Craven County) and Ragsdale (Guilford County), as well as a football, track, golf, and lacrosse coach. He also coached youth sports in Rockingham County. He took seriously the motto ‘to leave every place better than you found it’.

With his business students at Ragsdale, Cling established the Bigfoot Cycle Club ‘Ride for Hope’ (non-profit) to annually raise funds for a young person battling cancer.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, April 28, 5:00 pm at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 300 Knox Road, McLeansville NC 27301. Visitation with refreshments will follow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be mailed to Bigfoot Cycle Club ‘Ride for Hope’ to 3507 Anderson Valley Road, McLeansville NC 27301.

Scott, Shannon and family, I do not know why I recently had Cling on my mind. It must have been his way of saying good bye. I remember clearly when the three of you showed up for school at RSH. There are certain students who touch your soul as the 3 of you did mine. Each of you were so special and had your unique quirks. You make me smile anytime I think of you. I wish I had known Cling was right across the street from GTCC where I am now. I would have loved to have seen him again. I have not seen him in years, nor you. But I will miss him.
