GREENSBORO – Stephen Dale Hyers, 47, died Thursday, October 2, 2014, at Beacon Place in Greensboro after an 18 year battle with brain cancer. He was born on April 23, 1967 in Hartford, Connecticut. He graduated from Carson-Newman University in 1989, earning a B.A. in Communication Arts. He also received an M.F.A. in 2008 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In 1990, Stephen came to Greensboro where he began his employment with the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department. Since 2005, he served as Managing Director of the Greensboro City Arts Drama Center. He also taught playwriting courses at Elon University and North Carolina A&T State University.
Stephen is survived by his wife, Ashley Stone Hyers; son, Andrew John Hyers; daughter, Page Catharine Hyers; mother, Jeanne Shaver Johnson and her husband, Talmage, of Mebane; father, Dale Hyers and his wife, Linda, of Louisville, Kentucky; brother, Mark Hyers and wife Kim and their children Audrey and Dylan of Greenville, Indiana. Stephen also leaves behind many supportive friends in the Greensboro arts community.
He was an active member at Sedgefield Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and a member of the Christian Education Ministry Team.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to Dr. Robinson, Dr. Nudelman, Dr. Khan and the Wesley Long Cancer Center for their compassionate care for many years and to the caring staff at Beacon Place for their support and comfort. The family is most grateful to all the friends and colleagues for all their love and support.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 25 at 1:00 pm at Sedgefield Presbyterian Church, 4216 Wayne Road, Greensboro, NC 27407. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
